The co-founders of the well-known frozen dessert company Ben and Jerry's has claimed that corporate owner the multinational conglomerate prevented the introduction of a new Palestine-themed frozen dessert product.

The entrepreneur, who co-founded the business alongside his partner, disclosed that he plans to independently develop this new product within an individual collection highlighting issues Ben & Jerry's has been barred from speaking out about.

Ongoing Dispute Between Founders and Parent Company

The recent development intensifies the ongoing conflict between the world-famous dessert company with its corporate parent, the British packaged goods giant which acquired Ben & Jerry's for over two decades.

The co-founders maintain that Unilever along with their ice cream division the Magnum brand unlawfully blocked their company from "honouring its social mission".

Watermelon Sorbet becoming a Symbol for Solidarity

The entrepreneur announced through social media how he is creating an innovative watermelon-flavored frozen dessert, asking for consumer ideas for the product's name and potential ingredients.

“I'm accomplishing what they were prevented from doing,” the founder declared in a cooking set. “I'm creating a watermelon-based frozen dessert that calls for lasting ceasefire in Palestine while demanding repairing the damage that occurred in the region.”

The watermelon has emerged as an emblem of solidarity with the Palestinian people because of its colors, which mirror the colors in the Palestinian flag – the distinctive four-color pattern.

Previous Social Engagement plus Current Developments

In 2021, Ben & Jerry's refused to sell their merchandise in areas under Israeli control, leading to Unilever transferring their Israel business over to an Israeli distributor, thus allowing ongoing distribution within disputed territories.

This upcoming product line is being developed under Ben's Best, the activist ice cream brand that was first created in 2016 for endorsing ex- US presidential candidate Senator Sanders via the flavor "Bernie's Return".

Leadership Changes and Upcoming Intentions

The founder revealed that he will develop other frozen dessert varieties focusing on issues which the company was silenced from addressing publicly by corporate restrictions.

The announcement follows co-founder Mr. Greenfield resigned from the company recently, after many years of involvement, citing concerns that its independence was compromised following Unilever's decision to curb their advocacy work.

At that time, Mr. Cohen commented how “My partner has strong compassion and the ongoing dispute with Unilever was deeply distressing him."

“My conscience leads me to keep working within the organization to fight for its independence ensuring that the company can fulfill its ethical purpose, the values which established its foundation and has maintained for over 40 years," he explained to journalists.
