A Career Dedicated to the Arts
Born in Trowbridge in 1931, he established himself as a cherished figure who demystified classical music for millions.
He served as the BBC’s head of music and arts during the 1960s and 1970s, winning awards for programmes such as The Golden Ring.
1978 saw him pioneer the Young Musician of the Year, a contest instrumental in identifying future stars including violinist Nicola Benedetti.
