RAF Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a combined operation against an hidden munitions depot in Syria employed by the Islamic State group (IS), according to the UK's MoD.

The facility, located using surveillance, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was situated in mountainous terrain just above the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a series of approach shafts leading to the site... early reports are that the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the attack on Saturday evening and every plane involved returned safely, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - referred to as ISIS - imposed extremist governance over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This strike underscores our UK leadership, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to stamp out any revival of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey stated.

British military aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of the group subsequent to its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I must thank all the members of British forces involved in this operation for their expertise and their courage," he added. "They were among a great many UK service members stationed over the festive period. This action, to take out dangerous terrorists who endanger our way of life, demonstrates how British military are always on standby, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure domestically and influential overseas."

During December, the American forces carried out what it termed a "large-scale strike" targeting Islamic State objectives in the country, subsequent to an ambush resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The United Nations says IS still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in both countries.
