Federal Reserve Lowers Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Calendar Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The US monetary authority cut interest rates on midweek, representing the second rate cut in the current year during economic turbulence originating from the government closure and trade duties.

Move Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Central Bank

The decision to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under significant strain to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Labor Market Changes

In a announcement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had increased but stays modest. “Job gains have slowed,” the statement reads. “Inflation has moved up and remains somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Collection of key financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.

Data Gap Impacts Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve usually analyzes BLS data to determine labor market conditions, including the number of new jobs added to the economy and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and provided a somewhat gloomy overview of the employment scene in August.

The number of positions added to the market in the summer month was down by over 100k since the earlier season, and unemployment rose to four point three percent – the highest since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Show Continued Decline

Though BLS was scheduled to publish last month’s job market report in early October, it suspended its release when the shutdown began. Private payroll firm ADP indicated earlier this month that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand positions in last month, a indication that the job market is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has declined quite sharply,” Fed chair Jerome Powell said recently, which he had earlier attributed stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Price Data Reveals Gradual Increase

Though BLS’s employment data has been suspended, the bureau still issued its price statistics for September that showed that costs are rising, albeit gradually. Costs rose 3% over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
