Our team is checking images and video posted earlier today that purport to show the aftermath of a reported vehicle-borne explosive blast that Russian officials state fatally injured a high-ranking soldier in Moscow.
Russian authorities confirmed that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was in the car that exploded and that he later died of his injuries. An investigation is under way.
Our starting point to check the site from which the pictures originated relied on social media reports indicating the explosion happened on Yasenevaya Street in the southern part of the capital city of Russia.
Our analysis employed street-view imagery on Google Maps and the Russian search engine Yandex to corroborate the distinctive yellow colour of a nearby residential complex seen in the footage.
Identifying additional buildings, lamp-posts and the street layout verified where the pictures were taken.
Additionally, we verified that the videos were new and that the images had not undergone manipulated.
