New Year Partygoers Advised to Wrap Up Warm with Snowfall Expected Across the UK
Forecasters are reporting an icy start to the new year, with wintry precipitation likely across much of the UK. Celebrants have been told to dress warmly as sub-zero temperatures are forecast for New Year's Eve.
Hogmanay Plans Proceed Amid Alerts
The Scottish capital's renowned Hogmanay festivities are set to go ahead, unlike last year's calling-off. This is in spite of yellow warnings for snow across northern Scotland.
"An icy New Year's Eve evening for those out celebrating, so extra layers will be necessary," said the Met Office.
Displays Under Mostly Clear but Frosty Skies
Across the UK, the weather is set to be ideal for fireworks displays, with no rain and good visibility. Readings are due to be low, meaning additional clothing vital, said forecasters.
To the north, conditions will be cloudier, but this is unlikely to impact visibility for viewing fireworks. "We are not looking at low cloud, mist or murk, so you should be able to see fireworks, just not stars," commented one forecaster.
Extensive Weather Alerts for Friday
As we enter Friday, advisories are active across Northern Ireland and extending from Wales, through the north-west, the West Midlands and reaching London and the majority of the south-east of England.

Readings Forecast to Drop Even More
With the start of 2026, it will be "cold regardless of where you are," said forecaster Simon Partridge. Temperatures are set to plummet as snowfall and high winds are expected to hit the north of the country.
Around 10cm of snow is expected to have accumulated in some areas by Friday morning, with up to 30cm on the top roads and uplands.
Public Health Alerts Activated
Meanwhile, amber cold health alerts are in force for the north-east and north-west of England. These are set to remain in place until noon on 5 January, with the mercury forecast to fall to between 3C and 5C.
Authorities said this signified the weather could to lead to significant impacts across the NHS and care systems. This includes a expected uptick in the number of deaths among vulnerable individuals or those 65 and older.
