New York City Mayor Eric Adams to Endorse Andrew Cuomo in NYC Mayor's Election

New York City Mayor Eric Adams declared his intention to back Andrew Cuomo in the forthcoming mayoral race, despite months of strained relations between the two Democratic figures.

An Unexpected Turnaround After Previous Accusations

Only weeks ago, Adams had publicly condemned Cuomo, calling him a “snake and a untruthful person” and alleging of having “a career of marginalizing Black political contenders.” Yet, in a recent statement, Adams reversed course, announcing he now plans to appear with the former governor in neighborhoods where he maintains strong support.

“It is crucial to mobilize the communities of color that have suffered from gentrification on how important this race is,” Adams remarked.

He added, “They have watched their rents increase due to gentrification and they have been disregarded in those areas, and I plan to visit to those communities and talk directly with organizers and groups and I’m going to walk with the governor in those neighborhoods and get them motivated.”

Election Landscape and Current Developments

The mayoral contest has so far been shaped by the contest between Cuomo and democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani, whose increasing popularity has drawn interest globally and represented aspirations for a revitalized progressive wing of the Democrats.

During a recent candidate forum, both the democratic socialist and Republican nominee his conservative opponent declared they would decline Adams’s endorsement if offered.

Months ago, the mayor had launched his bid for another term as an independent after being indicted on federal corruption charges which were later dismissed in return for his assistance with federal immigration raids across the city.

At an separate media briefing on the same day, the mayor responded to journalists asking about the support announcement by saying, “Andrew and I will appear together later today.”

The announcement came a day after the two politicians were spotted sitting courtside together at the the NBA team's season opener at the famous arena, which occurred right after a contentious candidate debate.
