New York Jets Head Coach Aaron Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After NYC Incident
Jets head coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he has been in contact with cornerback Kris Boyd and believes the player will be OK after being shot in midtown Manhattan early Sunday morning.
Glenn described that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “in good spirits” during their latest talk.
“That gives me comfort, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His wife and his kid, they are holding up and he is expected to recover fully.”
The coach did not know when Boyd might be released the medical facility, where he is reported as serious yet stable.
“Not certain at the moment,” he added. “But I will say this, hearing him speak, he seemed very positive. Furthermore, that’s what gives me comfort, given his positive frame of mind and he expresses himself so positively.”
NYPD issued surveillance images Monday of a man sought in the attack on the player. The reason behind the incident remains under investigation and police mentioned it is unknown if Boyd was singled out. There were no additional victims as confirmed by officials.
The incident occurred just after 2am on Sunday morning in the area between MSG and the bustling tourist spot. Boyd, twenty-nine, was taken to a medical center after being shot in the abdomen, police said. The assailant escaped.
Glenn mentioned Boyd has been on his mind “constantly” since the news broke. He further stated that Boyd and his spouse are new parents to a baby.
“What immediately crossed my mind, he has a new baby,” Glenn said. “And I’m thinking about his wife, worrying about his newborn and I want to make sure that he’s OK. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“A certain process is underway, that I won’t detail, but I am pleased that he will recover excellently.”
Boyd hasn’t played this season, his first with the Jets, after his season was cut short due to injury on mid-August with a shoulder injury that needed an operation.
He joined the Jets as a new signing in spring and was anticipated to become an important component of the team’s updated special teams under Glenn and ST coordinator the special teams coach. However, he got hurt during a practice session on 2 August and was taken away on a cart.
Boyd has stayed involved with the squad throughout the season while recovering from the shoulder injury.
“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn stated. “I mean, he comes to the games all the time. He’s fully engaged. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”
Boyd, from Texas, spent his initial four years with Minnesota after getting drafted in the seventh round by Minnesota out of UT in 2019. He later played for the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and then joined Houston’s practice squad later that season. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal for $1.6 million with the Jets in March.
