New York's next mayor states he will make his home in the storied Gracie Mansion
NYC's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, will opt to live in the iconic Gracie Mansion, departing from the rent-stabilised apartment that was a central issue during his election bid.
A Historic Residence
Dating back to 1799, Gracie Mansion has been the mayoral home for nearly all New York City mayors from the post-war period.
Yet, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a key policy, hesitated to declare he would live there immediately following his electoral win in November.
"My choice was based on the security of my family and the importance of directing my complete efforts on carrying out the platform on affordability New Yorkers elected me on," stated Mamdani in his announcement.
A Fond Farewell
His home was in the Astoria neighbourhood, a community known for its diverse cultural enclaves and culinary diversity.
"To the people of Astoria: thank you for demonstrating what is great about New York City," he expressed.
"While I may no longer live in the neighborhood, it will forever remain within me and the work I do," he said.
Political Debate
In his race for mayor, Mamdani connected his core platform – a rent freeze – to his circumstances as a tenant.
But his rivals, most notably one-time governor Andrew Cuomo, criticised Mamdani for remaining in the apartment despite the fact that he came from a prominent family.
Previous Exceptions
Some mayors have chosen to live at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the business magnate, chose to live in his private home on the Upper East Side for his tenure, which ended in 2012.
Instead, Bloomberg felt it could serve as a space for public city functions, and pushed for an extensive renovation of the historic mansion.
A Stately Residence
When Mamdani moves into Gracie Mansion for his first day on 1 January, he will experience a setting a stark contrast to his modest Astoria digs.
Featuring cream-colored walls, green shutters, and pristine railings, Gracie Mansion is a picturesque home overlooking the East River.
Within, the ground floor of the classically designed mansion is furnished in the spirit of the home's original era.
The property, which reportedly has five bedrooms, also boasts increased security measures to secure the mayor and his family.
Supernatural Speculation
Some residents have suggested that Gracie Mansion also has ghostly inhabitants.
Chirlane McCray, the spouse of ex-mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that doors occasionally opened and shutting on their own, and the floorboards creaked eerily.
Former Mayor Eric Adams was adamant. "It doesn't matter what people claim," he stated in 2022. "It has spirits in there, man."
A Critical Policy Issue
His former home is under rent control, meaning the city regulates on how much landlords can increase rent each year.
Tenants view rent-stabilized housing as valuable lifelines as the price of rent rises faster than the average income.
It was reported Mamdani paid about $2,300 each month for his apartment.
Per figures from real estate analysts Zillow, the average rent for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
