Plans for Putin-Trump Meeting Delayed Days After Hungarian Capital Negotiations Announced

Currently exist "no plans" for US President President Trump to confer with Russia's Vladimir Putin "in the near term", a White House official has declared.

Recently the US president stated he and the Kremlin leader would meet in Hungary's capital within two weeks to address the war in Ukraine.

A preparatory meeting between America's top diplomat Secretary Rubio and his opposite number Sergei Lavrov was scheduled to occur recently - but the administration stated the two had had a "productive" conversation and that a face-to-face session was no longer "necessary".

The White House withheld further information on the reason the negotiations had been delayed.

Earlier Events

The US president had raised the possibility of a Budapest summit over the phone with the Russian leader, a just prior to meeting Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelensky in the Oval Office.

Some reports indicated his talks with the Ukrainian leader had been a "heated exchange", with those familiar suggesting Trump had pressured him to give up large areas of Ukraine's east as part of a settlement with Moscow.

Yet, on Monday Trump embraced a ceasefire proposal supported by Kyiv and European leaders to pause the hostilities on the existing battle lines.

"Let it be cut the way it is," he said.

Russia has consistently objected against halting the current line of contact.

The Russian government was solely focused on "permanent resolution", Russia's foreign minister stated on this week, implying that pausing conflict would only amount to a short-term truce.

Political Perspectives

The "root causes" of the hostilities demanded attention, Lavrov said, using Kremlin shorthand for a range of extensive requirements that include the acceptance of full Russian sovereignty over the Donbas as well as the disarmament of the country – a impossible condition for Kyiv and its EU supporters.

Zelensky said conversations concerning the front line were the "beginning of diplomacy" but that Moscow was "taking all measures" to evade negotiations.

He also said the exclusive issue that could cause Russia to "pay attention" was that of the provision of extended-range arms to the Ukrainian military.

Military Considerations

The Russian president's unplanned conversation with the US leader last Thursday occurred before speculation that the United States was considering delivering distance-capable weapons to Ukraine that could possibly hit Russian territory.

The Ukrainian leader asserted it was the missile discussion that had compelled Moscow to engage in discussion. The talk about the missiles had proven to be a "strong investment" in diplomacy", he remarked.
