Against a backdrop of freezing rain, snow, and a biting breeze from the waters of the Humber Estuary, alongside a determined home side pushing hard for a top-flight place, this had all the makings of a challenging evening’s task for Chelsea.

Liam Rosenior has this city close to his heart, given some of his family are from Hull and his enjoyable spell in management of the Tigers. This positive connection was extended with a commanding performance from his squad, who in the end sauntered into the next round of the FA Cup.

Deadly Finishing Secures Comprehensive Victory

Three days after letting slip a two-goal advantage in the league, there was a sniff of fragility about Chelsea going into this intriguing tie. The packed home crowd clearly sensed it too, but Rosenior's men handled the challenge with ease.

The manager rang the changes, enacting seven of them to his starting lineup. The match might and perhaps should have been decided long before it eventually was, with two Estêvão Willian and Liam Delap at fault for spurning glorious opportunities to put Chelsea ahead in the opening period.

However, fortunately for the away team, Pedro Neto was in a much more clinical mood. Delap's Response and Impact

The home side displayed plenty of fight throughout, but the better opportunities always fell Chelsea’s way. Estêvão should have opened the scoring when he went past goalkeeper the Hull stopper before unbelievably shooting over. Delap then had a similar horror incident in front of goal against his old team.

He blocked a the goalkeeper's kick which bounced off the bar, and he began to run away thinking the ball had crossed the line. It hadn’t, and by the time he understood, Hull's defenders had reacted to avert the threat.

The player had his head in his hands after that miss, but he was immensely instrumental from there on out, providing three key passes. The opening was for the opening goal as his pass teed up his teammate to score from outside the box. Shortly after the restart, it was 2-0 as the forward's corner went straight in under the keeper's legs.

Contest Sealed and Attention Shifts

Soon after the second goal, the match was effectively ended as a magnificent run from Delap laid on Estêvão to slide into an empty net. Neto then finished his treble as the provider again delivered the decisive pass for the striker to coolly convert by a stranded goalkeeper.

At that point, the work Hull had done in the first thirty minutes had been forgotten. Their focus must now switch back to achieving a return to the top division under Sergej Jakirovic, who rested a number of key players with that goal in mind.

"I think we earned at least one goal but if we play like this we will be in a very good situation in the league," the Hull manager commented. "Keep fighting, maybe in the next games this can be a good lesson of how we must play."

There was plenty of effort to the final whistle, and they almost claimed a consolation when a substitute struck a post in stoppage time. But this was the Blues' evening, and another encouraging stride for their recently-appointed manager at a stadium he knows intimately.

FA Cup Omens Look Promising

The result made for an ultimately straightforward evening’s performance, and the FA Cup-shaped signs are positive from here for the winners. They have played Hull on three previous occasions in this competition in the last decade and every single time, they have gone on to make the final. Much remains to be work in that regard, but this was another huge positive for the Chelsea boss.
