Torrential Downpours Aggravate Circumstances for Uprooted Gazans, Agencies Alert
Intense storms over the recent period have intensified the precarious living conditions of the many hundreds of thousands of uprooted civilians in the territory, according to humanitarian agencies.
"Terrible" Conditions Poses Grave Dangers
A spokesman described the recent storm as "terrible", with rain so heavy that around 15cm (6in) of water was seen on the ground.
"The recent weather was exceptionally horrendous for the people. The downpours were so intense... And the winds were so powerful," said the spokesperson.
Officials express significant anxiety that young ones residing in temporary structures in soaked attire will contract hypothermia and other sicknesses.
Fatalities and Significant Destruction
Health authorities have reported that one baby has succumbed from hypothermia and a minimum of 11 other people have died in roof cave-ins due to the severe weather.
Other reports indicate a increased death toll. Spokespeople said that several residential buildings had fully given way and many others had collapsed partially.
- Almost 55,000 families harmed by the weather.
- More than 40 official safe spaces submerged.
- Countless residents compelled to find new shelter.
Assistance Efforts Considered Not Enough
Groups have escalated distribution of shelter, bedding and garments since the halt in hostilities started, but they have said there is still not enough aid entering.
"We are striving constantly to provide that assistance and to hand it out, but the size of the necessities is so immense that we still have many thousands of families and children who are truly struggling nightly," cautioned one official.
Long-Term Concerns and Ceasefire Provisions
The second phase of the agreement includes arrangements for the reconstruction of Gaza, along with political arrangements, the withdrawal of personnel, and other terms.
Aid organizations have stressed the imperative for "increased and sustained humanitarian assistance to meet urgent and ongoing requirements."
The war was sparked by an attack in the autumn of 2023. Subsequent military operations have caused a high number of fatalities in the region, based on official reports.
