Vince Gilligan Reveals He Has an Idea of How Pluribus Might Finish... At the Moment.

Vince Gilligan could not have predicted that his new science-fiction series would turn into a cultural phenomenon. “God bless the fans,” he remarks. “It was unexpected the show being as passionately debated as it is, and it makes me thrilled beyond words.”

As the debut season of the acclaimed sci-fi show reaching its finale—and a second season already in development—Gilligan and his team recently discussed the viewer reception and whether it will impact the future direction of Pluribus.

On the Incredible Fan Response

It would be easy to get swayed by the rampant praise and audience predictions regarding Pluribus. The creator is striving to ignore the noise.

“It's like being force fed something incredibly sweet and being tickled to death,” he describes. “It's amazing, but I hear about it through word of mouth, and that's intentional. Never in my life Googled myself, nor do I ever intend to. It's not a lack of interest. It's a rabbit hole I know I would fall into and then I'd be living in squalor from Home Depot and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.”

Despite his concerted efforts, there’s no escaping the immensely favorable response to the series. The most practical strategy is to take it in stride and try not to let it influence the direction of the show.

“We make no attempt to adjust our writing,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The narrative we craft is not influenced by online forums.”

“Better to keep our heads down and working,” Gilligan concludes.

The Big Question: Has Vince Gilligan Know the Finale of Pluribus?

So if the creative staff aren't taking cues by audience theories, can we assume they have already decided how Pluribus will reach its endpoint? Essentially yes… sort of.

“We've developed some interesting ideas about how the story could conclude,” Gilligan reveals. “but we are always ready to abandon a good idea for a more brilliant plan. This approach has served us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We throw stuff out when we get a better idea and I suspect we'll be doing that.”

Alternatively, if they hit a wall, director and writer Gordon Smith has a pretty funny idea to serve as a last resort.

“I constantly suggest that it's all in a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and the characters are inside it,” he says humorously, “though the idea hasn't gained traction.”

Then again, why not reference the legendary finales?

“My dream is Carol to awaken beside Bob Newhart,” he jokes.

Pluribus can be watched on Apple TV.
