Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge System for the First Time.

The Championships tennis court with video review technology

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay systems.

Video review systems will make its debut at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Competitors will gain the ability to challenge certain rulings made by the chair umpire, following the practice currently in operation at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This technology will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This move arrives only a season following the All England Club rolled out electronic line calling, which brought an end to the centuries-old tradition of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Players will not be permitted to dispute the call of the ELC system, but they can ask for the umpire to review specific decisions, including:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball touched an opponent's racquet or person during play.
  • Possible interference at the conclusion of a point.

Notably, there will be no limit on the amount of challenges a competitor can initiate.

A Recent Example

An illustrative example took place in a recent tournament recently, where a top player used the review system against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a tough call for the umpire, but believed his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and determined the player was responsible for hindrance, awarding the point to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews are not new for Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have the system in place at every one of its events.

Further Updates

Another change at The Championships 2025 involves the addition of visual indicators on displays to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where fans have sometimes been uncertain if a ball was in or out.

In other news, with precisely 100 days to go until the start of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
